I’m right man for job, vows McClaren after rout
WE’RE not even out of August and it’s already apparent that Queens Park Rangers face a season of torment. Their manager Steve McClaren stood like a statue on the sidelines as his team slumped to their fourth league defeat of the season. McClaren knew he had inherited a club going through troubling times, what with a £17million Financial Fair Play fine and a transfer embargo ahead in January, but the on-pitch rally hasn’t materialised.
Rangers remain pointless and bottom of the Championship. The ex-England manager’s face dropped as Matty Taylor and an Andreas Weimann double earned Bristol City their opening win of the season and his
second-half substitutions drew derision from home fans. Afterwards, McClaren insisted he remains the right man for the job as he plans a raid on the loan market before August 31. ‘I knew the
situation when I came in,’ he said. ‘This board and the owners — if they could spend money, they would.’ On the supporter abuse, he added: ‘That is society now, an instant reaction. Am I pleased? No. Am I angry and disappointed? Yes. Am I determined to put it right? Yes.’ Taylor’s left-footed strike gave City the lead just before the break. Weimann headed the second and tapped in another in the final minute.
