AUGUST 23, 1940 IN TwO weeks, 550 Nazi airmen have been captured after being shot down in raids over Britain. An RAF officer who quizzed several said their stock reply is: ‘I am a German airman, and the only questions you must ask me are my regiment number, rank and name.’ Some 1,000 enemy flight crew have been killed in action and crashes over the country in the same period. AUGUST 23, 1968 BeATLe John Lennon is being divorced by wife Cynthia, who has named Yoko Ono in legal papers. Japanese artist Yoko, who made a controvers­ial film about nude bottoms, is married to film producer Anthony Cox. John, 27, and Yoko, 34, have denied allegation­s of adultery. Cynthia, also 27, married John in 1962 — before he was famous — and separated three months ago.
