Just let children be
I AM so glad that I was a child in the Sixties and Seventies and my parents let me be myself.
I have never been girly, preferring jeans, T-shirts and trainers to dresses and make-up. I spent my childhood climbing trees and playing football with the boys.
But if I was at primary school nowadays, I dread to imagine what would be happening. No doubt someone would be taking me to one side and asking if I identify as a male as I seem to prefer boyish things.
My two daughters have been allowed to be tomboys or girly, get dirty, be sporty and pursue their own interests without having gender stereotypes pushed at them.
They have grown into well-adjusted, tolerant adults, happy in their own bodies. We should let a child be the person they are without telling them there’s something wrong with them.
