FANS TURN ON RED ED

Supporters call for United chief to go

- By CHRIS WHEELER

MANCHESTER United chief ed Woodward came under more pressure last night after it emerged that fans have paid for a banner to be flown over turf Moor calling for his head.

It is understood that the message, to be displayed before United’s game at Burnley on September 2, will read ‘ed out — LUHG’ (Love United Hate Glazers) in protest at Woodward and the club’s American owners.

It will be the first time that unhappy United fans have employed the tactic since a similar banner was flown over old trafford in March 2014 in an attempt to force out David Moyes. the Scot was sacked a month later. Woodward’s position as executive vice- chairman is less perilous, but it is a sign that fans are prepared to aim their frustration at him instead of Jose Mourinho.

that could have implications for the United manager if Woodward decides that change is needed to avoid his own job coming under threat from the Glazers.

Mourinho and Woodward have been at odds over transfer policy despite United spending nearly £400million on players since the Portuguese arrived two years ago.

earlier this week, former old trafford favourite Gary Neville accused Woodward of undermining Mourinho by not backing him in the transfer market, and of staging a show of dissent by sitting stony-faced in his seat after Sunday’s shock defeat at Brighton.
