Labour muddle as its Brexit chief urges new referendum

-

LABOUR’S chaos over the EU deepened yesterday after the shadow Brexit secretary said a second referendum should be ‘on the table’.

Sir Keir Starmer said if MPs reject the deal that Theresa May puts forward ‘all options’ should be open.

He told Radio 4’s Today programme that Labour was not calling for a second public vote.

But he added: ‘There needs to be a democratic check. I don’t think the Prime Minister can simply decide for herself what the future of this country looks like. Parliament must decide what happens next. In those circumstances it seems to me that all options should be on the table.’

His comments came just days after Labour frontbench colleague Barry Gardiner warned that holding a second vote on Brexit could cause ‘civil disobedience’.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was pressed on Mr Gardiner’s remarks earlier this week and said: ‘There are no plans for anyone to hold a second referendum.’
