Arlene: Why the Pill was so liberating for 60s girls

-

FORMER Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has praised the contraceptive pill for liberating women and helping them ‘not be afraid of one-night stands’.

Miss Phillips, 75, who left Strictly in 2009, made the comments at the Edinburgh TV Festival during a talk about the effects of the Me Too movement.

The mother of two said the arrival of the Pill in the 1960s had empowered women.

‘With the Pill, there was the freedom for women to suddenly become independent, not afraid of one-night stands,’ she said following the talk.

‘Feeling very liberated, very strong, very independent – and it is my choice. Women were feeling independent in a sexual way… Women became fearless.’
