THE recall of James Vince

-

illustrates one of the flaws with English cricket: inbetweeners. The gulf between the Test and county game me is now too great. Vince has had three previous spells with England but has been dropped each time. He looks just short internationally, yet too good for his county. He is averaging 56.49 with Hampshire and most recently made d 147 against Nottinghamshire. So with Jonny Bairstow struggling, Vince is back in contention. Similarly, Moeen Ali (below) was in desperate form for England but this week became only the second man in Worce Worcestershire history to hit a double hun hundred and take five or more wickets in an innings. He made 219 against Yorkshire, and recorded six for 49, with match figures of eight for 89 — but didn’t look ca capable of anything like that with the ball for England towards the end, d no matter the conditions. This throws up all manner of selection issues. ‘Here’s one that failed earlier,’ as national selector Ed Smith didn’t say.
