Liverpool signed a proper keeper

-

LIVERPOOL was only my home for three years but I’ve never lost my affinity for the club and their start to the season has me excited. I’d love to see them win the title one day. The squads I played in could never quite get to the point of mounting a real challenge but I know exactly what it would be like if Liverpool do get into a position to become champions. When they went close under Brendan Rodgers, I went to the game in which they beat Manchester City 3-2 and the atmosphere around the pubs afterwards was electric. It will go through the roof if they make the final step — and they have got a fantastic chance to do that this year. The thing that has impressed me in their opening two games is the assurance they have shown. West Ham never caused them a moment’s trouble at Anfield and Crystal Palace never looked capable of hurting them either. Alisson, the new goalkeeper, was so impressive at Selhurst Park. I must have played there 20 times down the years and I still find it tough now. When the crowd get behind Palace, they can really rattle you but Alisson had only been there 20 minutes and he’d taken it all in his stride. His range of passing was outstanding and he made some great saves, too. Liverpool have got a proper goalkeeper to go with their two proper centre halves — Virgil van Dijk got a lot of plaudits but I was just as impressed by Joe Gomez, who has so much assurance. It won’t be easy for Liverpool to contain City. What City achieved last season marks them as one of the best teams we have ever seen — they aren’t going backwards. If Liverpool can stop them, it would be an incredible achievement. I hope they push City all the way.
