The Cruel Sea, 12.10pm, BBC2

‘THE only villain is the sea, the cruel sea that man has made more cruel.’ Jack Hawkins’s words in this World War II film are the perfect introduction. The film follows the men of the Royal Navy convoys as they face German U-boats, and Mother Nature’s wrath, on the Atlantic.

Dad’s Army, 8.30pm, ITV

WALMINGTON-ON-SEA’S Home Guard face an enemy in its midst in this revisit to the popular, long-running BBC sitcom. Great casting — Toby Jones as Mainwaring, Bill Nighy as Wilson, Blake Harrison as Pike, Michael Gambon as Godfrey (pictured) — makes it a decent, affectionate tribute, even if the modern techniques render it all a bit too slick and glossy.
