VAN DYCK IS DERBY FAVOURITE

- MARCUS TOWNEND

AIDAN O’BRIEN-trained Anthony Van Dyck is as short as 10-1 for the 2019 Investec Derby after a half-length win in the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. Ridden by Ryan Moore, the son of Galileo won over stablemates Christmas and Mohawk as O’Brien completed a 1-2-3. The Group One National Stakes at the Curragh on September 16 is next for Anthony Van Dyck, who has now won three of his four races. Moore said: ‘The ground was maybe just a bit too tacky for Anthony Van Dyck but he was well on top. I like him an awful lot.’ O’Brien intends sending Mendelssohn direct to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on November 3 after the colt delivered his best run on US Dirt so far when second to Catholic Boy in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday. ÷ PHILLIP MAKIN broke a bone in his neck when Eyecatcher fell fatally at Redcar on Saturday. Fellow jockey Royston Ffrench returns with four rides at Southwell today.
