Inspired Milner refuses to slip down the pecking order
THIS was a mundane performance by Liverpool, an evening to cool the hype a little and remind us that Jurgen Klopp’s team have some way to go before reaching Manchester City’s levels of consistency. City didn’t win at Wolves but they created chances. Here, Liverpool struggled. In most Liverpool performances there is something to cherish, though, and this weekend it once again came in the form of James Milner. Life under Klopp has always represented a challenge for the former City, Newcastle and Leeds player. He hated being used as leftback two seasons ago, but he got on with it and forced his way back into his favoured midfield on the back of desire and performances. Now, on paper — after Liverpool signed two midfielders in the summer — he finds himself down the pecking order. Yet Milner is still in the team. How does that happen? Well it happens when circumstances, such as injuries to other players, give you a chance on day one and you play so well it’s impossible for you to be left out. Milner was man of the match when Liverpool beat West Ham 4-0 two weeks ago, scored a penalty in the win at Palace last Monday and was the best player in red once again this weekend. At 32 years old, Milner is showing no signs of slowing down. He is an inspiration.
