Harris: We’re not playing Millwall way

- ALAN BIGGS at the New York Stadium

NEIL HARRIS recoiled from watching his side lose for the second time in five days and admitted: ‘We’ve got to be more Millwall-like.’ By contrast, a resolute Rotherham very much resembled themselves to crowbar a result that confounds wider perceptions of the standing of these two teams. It actually puts Paul Warne’s side above a Millwall outfit looking to repeat last season’s push for the play-offs. And although the Londoners rallied in the second half, Rotherham were the more effective team all-round and claimed a hardearned win. Warne declared himself ‘very proud’ after what he dubbed ‘a real football game in Yorkshire’ amid driving rain and a hint of autumnal chill. Millwall’s players had felt the heat of Harris’s anger after their loss at Sheffield Wednesday last week. He judged this to be an improved performance but declared: ‘I’m frustrated because that’s twice in four days we’ve thrown points away. It was about one moment when we didn’t compete.’ That was in the 20th minute as Sean Raggett’s desire to be the dominant figure in a crowded area saw him powerfully head what proved to be the winner from a precise cross by Will Vaulks. Harris summed up: ‘We have to have a better defensive mindset and “score-the-first-goal” mindset. To be more Millwall-like.’ Although the visitors stepped up a gear after the break, with Jed Wallace the most dangerous player on the field, Warne’s side defended doggedly to restrict clear chances. Millwall introduced Tom Bradshaw from the bench following his move from Barnsley but could not force an equaliser. Wallace came closest while Jake Cooper and Tom Elliot forced good saves from Marek Rodak. Against that, visiting goalkeeper Jordan Archer kept Millwall in the game when he denied Michael Smith after a one-on-one opportunity. Rotherham will do well on their resources to stay in the Championship after promotion last season but there is no questioning their organisation or resilience.
