PLAYER RATINGS

- By CHRIS WHEELER

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1) TEAM AVERAGE 5.9

DAVID DE GEA 6 Little chance with any of the goals but made a great save from Alli to keep United in it. ANDER HERRERA 5.5 Gamble to play him on right side of a back three and he failed to cut out second goal. CHRIS SMALLING 5.5 One of six changes. Denied Alli twice but was caught for pace on the third goal. PHIL JONES 5 Lucky not to concede a penalty for pushing Moura over and then lost Kane on the corner. ANTONIO VALENCIA 6 Gave United more energy on the right after being criticised for his fitness in the summer. PAUL POGBA 6.5 Better attitude than at Brighton and went close twice, but needs to step up more in big games. NEMANJA MATIC 5.5 Caught in possession early on and looked off the pace after abdominal surgery. LUKE SHAW 7 Looks more confident with every game after making his third start in a row. Got forward well. JESSE LINGARD 6 Typically energetic display from him but lacked the penetration to worry Spurs. FRED 7 Lively from the start and could have scored inside 20 seconds. Best display for club so far. ROMELU LUKAKU 5 Missed an open goal in the first half and headed another clear chance wide. Poor from him.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-2-3-1) TEAM AVERAGE 6.6

HUGO LLORIS 6.5 Guilty of some indecision and poor kicking, but made a fine save from Lukaku. KIERAN TRIPPIER 6 Good duel with Shaw and started the move that led to the second goal. TOBY ALDERWEIRELD 6.5 Showed why United have been after him with great interception to deny Lingard a goal. JAN VERTONGHEN 6.5 Stood strong but was inches away from diverting Matic’s cross into his own net. DANNY ROSE 6 Awful back-pass almost cost his team a goal but recovered to give a solid performance. ERIC DIER 6 Another steadying influence who allowed Spurs to get forward with confidence. MOUSA DEMBELE 6.5 In a match high on pace and energy, it needed a composed display from the Belgian. LUCAS MOURA 8 His powerful running caused United all sorts of problems and scored two fine goals. DELE ALLI 6.5 Got into some great positions but either took the wrong option or failed to convert. CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN 6.5 Scuffed a good chance before half-time but made amends to set up the second goal. HARRY KANE 7 Lovely guided header to claim his first goal at Old Trafford and set Spurs on course for victory.
