Carnival haul that shows shocking extent of UK’s knife crime crisis

ALMOST 400 revellers were arrested at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival – a rise of 23 per cent on last year.

Police seized 69 weapons – including 49 knives, such as the ones pictured left – and a bottle of acid during the three-day festival in west London that finished on Monday.

Some 30 officers were injured, with three bitten, two spat at in the face and one head-butted. Another officer suffered a broken kneecap.

The Metropolitan Police arrested 373 revellers and 12 were arrested by the British Transport Police. There were 313 arrests last year.

The Met said the trouble had been mostly gang-related. A spokesman added: ‘There’s no other event in the UK where this would be allowed to happen every year and yet have it continue as is.’
