Anger over Bono’s plan to wave EU f lag at U2 gigs
RoCK star Bono infuriated Brexiteers yesterday by pledging to wave the EU flag at forthcoming U2 concerts.
The band’s multi-millionaire frontman was ridiculed after claiming that, following the Brexit vote, national patriotism has been ‘stolen from us by nationalists and extremists’. The Irish singer made the pledge in an article yesterday for German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Announcing the plan ahead of this weekend’s Berlin launch of the band’s European tour, he wrote that a rock band is ‘at its best when it shocks’ and added: ‘Well, we’ve just had one of our more provocative ideas: during the show we’re going to wave a big, bright, blue EU flag.’
Bono, a fervent EU supporter, described it as a ‘ radical act’ but Brexiteer Tory MP Andrew Rosindell said: ‘People like Bono will soon realise that actually people like him for his music, not his politics, and I suggest he sticks to that rather than start waving a flag around that no one in Britain has any love for.’
