Falling for angling, hook, line & sinker

-

FOr years, my wife Ann has been relatively content to be a fisherman’s wife — until recently, on a family holiday in Florida, she took matters into her own hands. Being a sprightly 72-year-old, she decided that the time had come to show my son and me what a real angler is capable of — and, for the first time, she decided to come out with us on a big-game angling boat. Well, I wasn’t sure that was a good idea, since I had been trying for years to catch a cobia — one of the toughest fighting fish in the world, and a species that was high on my bucket list. Well, you can guess the rest. Not only was my wife the only angler on the boat to catch a cobia, but she also proceeded to catch a lot of big sharks — weighing up to 100lb — as well! All in all, it was a great fishing day for us (apart from the cobia, in my case). Not only is my wife a great golfer, she is also a superb curler. My son and I are fervently hoping she does not get the fishing bug and settles for her more sedate pursuits! Jim McLanaghan, East Wemyss, Fife.
