How can I make their first day at school less scary?

-

IT’S A big moment for every parent and child – their first day at school. And while many children can’t wait to start, others are daunted by the thought of it.

But you can make it less scary for them. Make sure they’ve been to the school before, even if it’s just to see it from the outside, so it seems less intimidating.

If any of their nursery friends or children they play with are joining them, get them together this weekend to give them a bit more confidence.

MAKING NEW FRIENDS

IF THEY’RE still worried, invite one of your old school friends over and reminisce about the great times you use to have, to allay their fears. Teach them how to make friends and how to start a conversation, skills they’ll need in the coming days and weeks. Maybe let them watch the latest ‘must-see’ TV programme, if it’s age appropriate, to give them something to talk about.

Another good idea is to teach them the new vocabulary they’ll need when they start school, such

as assembly, timetable, bell, maths and grammar. If they know what the teacher’s talking about, they’ll feel happier. Go through the school day with them, so they know what to expect – from what happens in those assemblies to the breaks they’ll get when they can go to the toilet or have a drink and lunch, when they’ll be expected to eat in the canteen. And don’t forget to tell them what to do if certain things happen, like they need the loo in lessons. Finally, make a list of everything they need to do at home every day before school, such as brush their teeth and hair, put on their uniform and pack their bag. Then pin it up by their bed so they can check it any time they like, or try to memorise it.
