Labour giant Frank Field has quit because the party he’s given his life to is mired in anti-Semitism. What are his fellow MPs waiting for?

-

FRANK Field is that vanishingly rare figure in the tribal and often bellicose world of Westminster – a giant of a politician who commands respect, admiration and affection across the party spectrum.

A man of strong Christian principle, his quiet charm and tireless work on behalf of the less fortunate in our society have endeared him to colleagues and opponents alike over four decades as an MP.

So his resignation of the Labour whip is a crushing blow to all decent party members – and a devastating indictment of Jeremy Corbyn.

The former Welfare Minister’s critique of Labour and its leader is truly excoriating. He says Mr Corbyn has encouraged ‘appalling levels of bullying and intimidation’ and made the party ‘a force for anti-Semitism’.

His damning words come just weeks after the Mail’s revelation that Mr Corbyn carried a wreath at a ceremony to honour terrorists linked to the Munich massacre.

Mr Field himself has been the victim of ‘thuggish’ behaviour from Corbynistas who want to eject him from his Birkenhead seat. So he now plans to take them on by standing as an Independent Labour candidate at the next election.

This isn’t the first time Mr Field has stood firm against extremism in his party. In the 1980s he led the battle against the Militant Tendency in Merseyside – and won.

But the big difference then was that he felt able to remain inside the Labour tent because his struggle was supported by the party leadership. Today, the leadership is a huge part of the problem.

So now that Mr Field has had the courage and integrity to quit, how many of his fellow MPs will follow?

The party they knew and loved is dying. It has been colonised by Marxist zealots pursuing a class war agenda and an economic plan that would bankrupt Britain.

And because of Ed Miliband’s idiotic changes to party rules, there is no prospect of reversing this catastrophe any time soon.

So the choice for moderate Labour MPs is clear. Stay, suffer the trolling in silence and eventually be purged anyway. Or take the honourable step – resign the whip and fight the invaders from the outside.

By his brave example, Mr Field – who has given his life to his party – has shown them the way. What are they waiting for?
