I was in a coma after toxic odour in hotel room, too
A COUPLE have described how they ended up seriously ill after staying in an Egyptian hotel room that smelt ‘toxic’.
Michelle Cohen, 58, said she fell into a coma with heart and liver failure and sepsis, while her husband Arnold, 64, suffered a heart attack. They were taken to hospital, where doctors told their daughter that Mrs Cohen came close to dying.
Marriott International, which manages the Renaissance Sharm El Sheikh Golden View Beach Resort where the family were staying, said an investigation had been unable to find a link between the Cohens’ illness and conditions at the hotel.
The couple revealed their 2015 ordeal after the deaths of John Cooper, 69, and his wife Susan, 63, during a holiday in Egypt just over a week ago. Their daughter Kelly has said there was a ‘strange odour’ in their room.
Mrs Cohen, from Liverpool, said her seaview hotel room at the South Sinai resort also smelt ‘horrendous’.
She added: ‘It was like a cross between gas, onions and ammonia – it was a toxic smell.’ On the eighth night of their stay they woke at 4.15am and were violently sick. They were taken to hospital and put on a drip before their condition deteriorated
The couple, who have been pursuing legal action against Marriott, said their experience was ‘uncannily’ like that of the Coopers.
Marriott International said: ‘We take the wellbeing of our guests very seriously. We are arranging for representatives to respond to any questions the Cohens may have.’
