Maybe it’s time to read the runes after Channel 4’s Bake Off has lost 400,000 viewers since last year — and has millions fewer than its glory days on the BBC.

Whisper it, but maybe we’ve just become fed up with sweaty, anxious amateur bakers concocting ludicrous cakes that none of us would even contemplate making at home.
