Moment murder suspect is held after police chase

- By Jim Norton

THE suspected murderer of a mother and her daughter was finally caught sprinting down an alley as a three-day manhunt came to a dramatic end.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder following the stabbing of Raneem Oudeh, 22 and Khaola Saleem, 49, just after midnight on Bank Holiday Monday in Solihull.

CCTV footage shows the unnamed suspect finding himself at a dead end before police pepper- spray him, handcuff him on the ground and take him away for questioning in Birmingham on Thursday night.

Following the killings, a £5,000 reward was offered for anyone with information on Miss Oudeh’s ex-boyfriend Janbaz Tarin, 21.

The Syria-born student, who had a twoyear-old son, had been in a relationship with Tarin, who is originally from Afghanistan.

But she moved out of the flat they shared and back in with her mother after a series of rows days before the attack. Neighbours on the road where the suspect was arrested in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham, six miles from Monday’s stabbings, said they had seen him coming out of another flat and later behind a shop with around six police officers giving chase at around 10.15pm.

A witness said: ‘It was pretty dramatic, he tried to leg it on foot after jumping over a car but the cops were too fast. They caught up with him by the alleyway and he gave up struggling, they pepper- sprayed him.’ The neighbour said the ‘moaning and groaning’ suspect gave him name as ‘Janbaz’.

Earlier this week, detectives said they believed Tarin was being protected locally and warned anyone doing so would be prosecuted.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, who is leading the investigation, thanked the community for their ‘excellent’ response to police appeals, which she said led to the arrest.
