Squalid conditions at 5-star hotel where UK couple died
TOURISTS who fell ill after staying at an Egyptian hotel where an apparently healthy British couple died in mysterious circumstances have shared pictures of the ‘catastrophically dirty’ resort.
Since John and Susan Cooper died, dozens have complained about poor health and safety standards at the five-star complex in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.
Photos sent to MailOnline show a filthy sun-lounger, dirty bathrooms, uncovered buffet food and a parasol held up by a screw. A video shows the swimming pool covered in grime at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel with what appears to be mould in the filter system.
Michael Wasner, from Germany, fell ill at the hotel three weeks before the Coopers’ sudden deaths led Thomas Cook to evacuate 300 guests from the hotel as a precaution.
‘The hotel is in a catastrophic condition and the cleanliness is terrible,’ he told MailOnline. ‘Out of our group of eight, four of us were extremely sick.’
A spokesman for the German-owned hotel said: ‘In respect for the family and the investigations of the authorities we cannot comment on statements or pictures at the moment.’ He added that it was running its own investigation into the Coopers’ deaths.
