‘This knife trend has to stop’

THE grandson of The Specials singer Neville Staple has been stabbed to death outside a nightclub.

Mr Staple yesterday spoke of his ‘heartbreaking loss’ over the murder of Fidel Glasgow, the 21-yearold son of his daughter Melanie.

Mr Glasgow was stabbed in the stomach outside a Coventry nightclub in the early hours of Saturday. He was found at the rear of Club M, in the city centre, at 5.30am and died in hospital, West Midlands Police said.

Another man, aged 23, was found nearby with stab wounds and remains in hospital. Police have not yet confirmed whether the stabbings are linked. They added that a man, also 23, had been arrested and he was being questioned yesterday.

Mr Staple, whose Specials hits include the number one Ghost Town, wrote on Facebook: ‘We are truly devastated to announce the heartbreaking loss of my grandson Fidel (my daughter Melanie’s son), who died as a result of being attacked with a knife in the street.’ He added: ‘ Let’s show the young people that this knife trend has to stop! It has to STOP!’

Mr Staple, who was kicking off a UK tour with his Neville Staple Band at the weekend, dedicated his performance at the Godiva Festival in Coventry yesterday to his grandson.

The 63-year-old, who also sang with Fun Boy Three, added: ‘My wife Christine and I have decided that our shows this week, in Coventry and Brighton, will go on and will be dedicated to our grandson Fidel and daughter Melanie, who asked that we still perform.’ Mrs Staple paid tribute to her grandson midway through their performance yesterday. She said: ‘Knives take lives. If you want to fight do it on a football pitch, or a rugby pitch, or team on team... do it a sensible way. You still have a winner but no one is going to die.’

In a statement, Melanie Staple said: ‘When your beautiful heart stopped beating my heart broke in two, knowing that here on Earth there won’t be another quite like you.

‘My beautiful, one- of-a-kind child, you’re a part of me today and always. RIP, baby boy.’

In another incident in Coventry on Saturday, a teenager suffered a cardiac arrest when he was tasered by police.

The 17-year-old was in a serious but stable condition in hospital last night. Four other youths – three aged 17 and a 13year-old – were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a police officer.
