Wake bright-eyed and bushy-tailed
GETTING eight hours of restful sleep, so that we wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, would be a breeze in an ideal
world. Sadly, our time of life and overall health can all too easily steal our shut-eye. This month has been designated Sleeptember by the Sleep Council, which has come up with some helpful tips for those over 55. Many in this age group wake too early, feeling either too hot or cold, uncomfortable, or disturbed by a partner’s snoring. The Sleep Council advises finding a duvet cover that will help to regulate body temperature for sleep, made from wool, alpaca, silk or bamboo, for example. There are also mattresses available that are designed to be breathable and regulate temperature. As for snoring, this should be looked at by a professional, as it may indicate sleep apnoea. A change of mattress can help. And an adjustable bed will provide a surface that adapts to individual sleep postures, helping both partners to sleep soundly. Winding down is important before bed, so talking on the phone or watching a gripping film is not a good idea. A warm bath or short walk can help you settle, as will banning caffeine after 3pm and not eating food after 8pm.
PUTTING your feet up in an adjustable bed or on a recliner chair can be beneficial, providing temporary relief from aches and pains. A high leg lift chair provides an easy way to raise your legs in comfort — helpful for those suffering from swelling. And a riser chair will take the strain off your back and knees when getting up.
