Vettel seethes over decisive collision

- JONATHAN McEVOY

SEBASTIAN VETTEL last night accused Lewis Hamilton of wrecking his Italian Grand Prix in a pivotal first-lap crash. Although the German fought back from 19th place to finish fourth, he was seething after his title deficit to Hamilton increased to 30 points. The incident occurred as Hamilton moved ahead on the outside line at the fourth bend and the pair clashed. Vettel spun, leaving Hamilton free to ultimately take the victory. ‘Lewis didn’t leave me any space and I had no choice but to run into him and make contact,’ said Vettel. ‘I tried to get out but I couldn’t. Unfortunately, I was the one that spun around, which is ironic.’ But his interpretation of the crash was not shared by the stewards, who declined to sanction either driver. Hamilton said: ‘I was a bit surprised Seb chose the inside. ‘That was my opportunity. I stuck it down the outside and made sure I was far enough alongside. There was enough space between us.’
