England held their nerve to win the first Test by 31 runs with Ben Stokes having the decisive say just two days before his appearance at Bristol Crown Court. The all-rounder struck twice in his first over on the final day, including taking the wicket of India captain Virat Kohli with his third ball. He sealed the victory with the dismissal of Hardik Pandya.

England took a 2-0 series lead by sealing a crushing innings and 159-run victory at Lord’s. Afterwards, Joe Root admitted he was dreaming of a 5-0 whitewash — something England had only managed to do once before, in 1959.
