England held their nerve to win the first Test by 31 runs with Ben Stokes having the decisive say just two days before his appearance at Bristol Crown Court. The all-rounder struck twice in his first over on the final day, including taking the wicket of India captain Virat Kohli with his third ball. He sealed the victory with the dismissal of Hardik Pandya.

It was sealed when Anderson fell to the 17th ball of the final day in front of a handful of spectators. Root was forced to defend Alastair Cook, who was criticised after managing only 29 and 17 during the heavy defeat.
