Too late for 2nd vote – by law
CAMPAIGNERS for a second Brexit referendum before Britain leaves the EU have run out of time, a study has warned.
Remainers want a so-called ‘people’s vote’ on the final deal negotiated by Theresa May. But the study warns that, legally, they have left it too late to hold a referendum ahead of the scheduled exit on March 29.
The study, by the Constitution Unit at University College London, said any poll would need primary legislation. It added: ‘If legislation were introduced the day Parliament returned from the party conference recess on October 9, the earliest Thursday on which a referendum could be held would be March 28 – the very day before exit day.’
