Bill to send a child to private school? £275k!

- By Eleanor Harding Education Correspondent

THE cost of sending a child to private school is now more than ten times the average wage – at more than £275,000.

The enormous sum, which would pay for a child’s education from age five to 18, is enough to buy a detached house in many parts of the country.

Broken down, average fees are now £17,232 per year, or £5,744 per term, research by Fidelity International found. The figures represent a 3.4 per cent rise on 2017, when fees were £16,665 per year. Fees have risen steadily as the demographics of applicants have changed. Increasingly, many British schools are recruiting pupils from wealthy families in China, Russia and the Middle East. Based on figures from the census of the Independent Schools Council, Fidelity said that at the current rate of increase, it would cost parents £275,928 to fund a child’s education from Year 1 through to Year 13.

This is more than ten times the average annual salary of £26,936.
