THIS adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s famous novel has stiff competition from previous versions by George Cukor and Mervyn LeRoy, but a strong cast gives it a good shot. Susan Sarandon is Marmee, with Trini Alvarado, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst as her strong-willed daughters growing up during the American Civil War.
