Carney ‘willing’ to stay on at Bank
MARK carney has said he is prepared to stay on as Bank of England governor – paving the way for an extra year overseeing Britain’s economy.
The 53- year- old canadian was previously expected to leave next June, shortly after Brexit. But in a U-turn he has now told MPs that he is willing to serve for longer to avoid disruption.
speaking to the Treasury select committee in Parliament, carney said: ‘I fully recognise that during this critical period it’s important that everyone does everything they can to help with the transition to exit the European Union.
‘I can’t make the announcement on behalf of the Government, but I’ve signalled a willingness to do whatever I can to support this process.
‘We have a very important supportive role to make sure whatever Brexit the government negotiates, that Parliament decides, that that is as much of a success as possible.’ carney said he has been in talks with the chancellor about his future but refused to be drawn on the details. He said he expects an announcement to be made shortly.
