Drivers see red

-

DRIVERS are set to lose their licence on the spot if they fail a sight test (Mail).

Why aren’t there stricter clampdowns on the rising number on the road who have never passed a driving test, are uninsured or are under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs?

Surely, the driver’s sight should be tested by a qualified optician to make sure the failure wasn’t a one- off due to poor light, weather conditions or alarm at being stopped by the police.

It is feared that pensioners will be targeted. However, the age group who have the most accidents are males aged under 25. Older drivers are among the safest on the road. Name supplied, Ruislip, Middx. I’M ALL in favour of the police being given the authority to revoke driving licences should a driver fail a roadside sight test. However, this does not go far enough.

I am able to read the bottom line of the eye test chart without any visual aids, but I lost my licence due to my peripheral vision not meeting DVLA standards.

I expect there is a large number of drivers who would also fail such a test.
