One in twelve drivers are opting to go electric when they buy new cars, figures show.

demand for hybrid and full- electric cars surged 88.7pc in August, pushing the market share of the vehicles to a record 8pc.

Almost 7,500 of the cars were registered, up from 4,000 during the same month a year ago, according to the society of Motor Manufactur­ers and Traders (sMMT). Overall, more than 94,000 new cars were registered in August.

Mike Hawes, sMMT chief executive, said: ‘It’s great to see such strong growth, particular­ly in the important electric vehicle market.’
