STORY BEHIND CABINET 552 by Josef Frank
WHO WAS HE? Austrian designer Josef Frank (18851967) emigrated to Sweden from Vienna in the Thirties, escaping anti-Semitism, and worked for the interior design company Svenskt Tenn from 1934 to 1950.
HE LIKED PATTERN? Very much. He had a prodigious output, leaving 2,000 furniture sketches and 160 textile designs. WHEN DID HE DESIGN THIS? In 1934-35. He was inspired by the British fashion for dressing furniture with fabric. WHAT’S THE PRINT? The design is Celotocaulis, based on an Asian flower.
SO CAN I BUY THE CABINET? It’s pricey at £7,376 (€8,200) but you could cover a cushion with the fabric, £152 a metre, instead, svenskttenn.se.
