DANNY DENIED BY REF’S BLUNDER

- MY VERDICT MARK CLATTENBURG

DANNY WELBECK’S late goal against Spain should have stood. The decision to award a free-kick for an apparent foul by Welbeck was wrong because David de Gea lost the ball without the England striker making contact with him. The contact came after he’d lost his grip on the ball and it was the fault of the goalkeeper, not Welbeck, that he did so. The fifth official was so close to the incident that we can only assume he made the call, or at least agreed with the referee. If VAR had been in use then this would have been referred to a pitchside review and I am sure the referee would have then changed his decision.
