Making a splash at £1,500, Apple’s priciest iPhone yet

APPLE has unveiled a supersize iPhone – with a price tag to match.

The smartphone was launched last night in California along with the latest Apple Watch.

The new watch is thinner, includes a sophisticated heart monitor and tracks wearers’ health around the clock.

The cost of buying the top iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch together comes to almost £3,000.

The iPhone XS Max offers a 6.5in screen, with one model coming with 512GB of storage – more than any previous iPhone and enough to hold over 200,000 photos.

Apple said that while the screen is bigger than previous models, it covers more of the surface, meaning the phone itself is no larger.

It said the speakers have been improved to make watching films, playing games and listening to music a better experience.

The phone has a new processing chip called the A12 Bionic, making it quicker to open apps and recognise the user’s face when unlocking the device.

And in a move that will reassure buyers their investment will be well- protected, the phone is water resistant, and can survive being submerged at depths of up to two metres for 30 minutes.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook unveiled a series of new devices at its Cupertino headquarters. As well as the iPhone XS Max, the firm revealed the iPhone XS, which boasts similar features behind a 5.8in screen. Both will go on sale later this month.

A budget iPhone, the XR, that comes with a 6.1in screen using cheaper technology, will be available next month.

The iPhone XR will sell for £749, while the XS starts at £999 and the XS Max at £1,099 for 64GB version – rising to £1,499 for the top- of-the-line 512GB option. A completely new version of the Apple Watch – which the firm said was the best-selling watch of any make or model in the world – was also unveiled and will come to stores this month.

It boasts a larger screen but thinner body, and monitors vital signals making users aware of any indicators of health issues. It can also alert emergency services if the user has a fall.

It starts at £399. The firm also offers a design by French fashion house Hermes priced at £1,499.
