So should you buy Holly’s must-haves?

Our style editor’s verdict on the M&S collection everyone’s talking about . . .

Every season Marks & Spencer comes up with a few must buys, but finding fashion gold in stores crammed with staples isn’t easy.

So they’ve hired the nation’s favourite morning Tv presenter, Holly Willoughby, to do the searching for you. The 37-year-old mum of three has curated a Holly’s MustHaves’ capsule collection of her favourite 20 pieces from the current M&S range. She’s also dishing out style advice.

Holly already shares details of the outfits she wears on This Morning, from the likes of Oasis, Topshop and LK Bennett, on Instagram — and they invariably sell out, earning her the moniker Holly Will-you buy. M&S clearly hopes she’ll do the same for them.

But will it be enough to combat the decline of their clothing business — and can Holly put the spark back in Marks?

We had an exclusive sneak peek at Holly’s picks, giving us time to feel, try on and test each of the 20 pieces she chose. Are the fabrics good quality? Has she picked up on the season’s key trends? Here’s our verdict.

PINK COAT In the past, pink coats have been a huge success for M&S, but this one misses the mark — it’s too short and the zips look dated. But you can’t argue with the price. City coat, £69.

HIGH-NECK TOP Dress it up with a pencil skirt and heels, or down with jeans and trainers. It looked great with Holly’s Must-Haves tailored checked trousers. Top, £29.50.

CHECK BLAZER There are countless iterations of the check blazer and this is one of the best on the High Street. Doublebreasted, it can be worn over dresses or with jeans. Pull up the sleeves for a cool look and, when the weather takes a turn for the worse, layer under a plain coat. Blazer, £69

MINI SKIRT Minis aren’t easy to wear but if you’re going to take on the trend then this classic check is a nice choice and will look great on a petite frame. The Sixties-style button is a nice detail. skirt, £29.50

WHITE SHIRT A versatile white shirt is a wardrobe essential and this one looks like silk but without the hefty price tag. It’s a wide c cut but fitted on the arms. The gold b button detail on cuffs is a smart touch. shirt £29.50

SLOGAN T-SHIRT A wardrobe staple. This one is a great shape, in fabulously soft cotton, with slightly longer sleeves for those of us who don’t want to show too much upper arm. Wear it under the checked blazer. T-shirt, £19.50.

SKINNY JEANS Skinnies are finally falling out of fashion so Holly could have been a bit more adventurous here. M&S is the second biggest denim retailer in the UK so it would have been nice to see a straight leg, or kick flare. Collection jeans, £19.50

BLOCK-HEEL BOOTS With heels that give height without sacrificing comfort, these leather boots are a great addition to your autumn wardrobe and will be a stylish weekend staple. Block-heel boots, £79.
