£8m flop is sacked for being unfit

- By DAN RIPLEY

A PLAYER once signed by Jose Mourinho has been sacked by League One Sunderland after he reported back late to pre-season training and then ‘comprehensively’ failed a fitness test. Papy Djilobodji was on £30,000 a week after joining Sunderland for £8million in August 2016, but has not played a league game for them since a 2-0 defeat at West Brom in January 2017. The defender flopped under Mourinho at Chelsea in 2015 but played 23 games for David Moyes at Sunderland in 2016-17. He went AWOL for a month during the summer along with Didier Ndong and returned totally out of shape. ‘Sunderland has given notice under its contract with Papy Djilobodji,’ the club said in a statement. Ndong has yet to return to the club.
