BBC turn-off

-

HOW dare the bbC propose scrapping the free TV licence for over-75s (Mail)? it says it will make fewer new programmes, axe services and has ‘cut all the low-hanging fruit’, but still needs n to make major savings.

May i suggest it starts cutting the high-hanging fruit? The amount paid to presenters is outrageous. Sports programmes p need only one presenter, while pundits are superfluous and annoying.

Why should pensioners have to bear the brunt of bbC profligacy? it needs to balance the books in favour of viewers, not the bbC hierarchy.

Mrs GINA WATSON, Orgiva, Spain. OnCE again pensioners are the easiest option because we never make a fuss.

it doesn’t matter that we paid our taxes for years and were hoping for some help as we get older. The bbC would be better off cutting the exorbitant salaries it pays to its underworked so-called celebrities.

Alternatively, make those who want to watch the bbC pay for it, while all those who don’t should be exempt from the licence fee. CHRIS WHITELAND,

Sittingbourne, Kent. A bETTEr solution would be to scrap the licence. Most people pay to watch sport and favourite shows on cable and satellite channels anyway. it’s about time there was a fairer way of paying for TV, such as per programme, rather than having to fork out for all the rubbish we don’t want to watch.

SUE HUTCHINGS, Birmingham. THE over-75s may no longer receive a free TV licence, yet MPs can get theirs on expenses and the Speaker even claims for Sky Sports.

A. GRANT, Glasgow. HOW could i, a widow on pension credit, afford to pay for a TV licence? i fear i shall end up staring at the wall, unable to keep up with world events. i shall die of boredom and sheer misery. Maybe that is part of the bbC’s agenda. Surely pensioners could be means-tested.

TRUDI PHILLIPS, address supplied.
