IT was the night Britain ruled the Emmys, scooping five major awards and the fashion plaudits.

Leading the way in TV’s equivalent of the Oscars was The Crown star Claire Foy.

She was named Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as a young Queen Elizabeth in the hit Netflix series.

‘This wasn’t supposed to happen’, the 34-year- old actress said after beating The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss to the award.

Miss Foy looked stunning in Calvin Klein – but teaming her ivory dress with asymmetrical jewelled suede anklestrap sandals that led some viewers to believe, mistakenly, she was wearing odd shoes.

Thandie Newton, in a flowing pink gown, accepted the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for Westworld but shocked the audience in Los Angeles with an expletive in her speech.

She beat fellow Britons Vanessa Kirby, who had been nominated for playing Princess Margaret in The Crown, and Millie Bobby Brown, nominated for Stranger Things

Miss Kirby also opted for pink – a figure-hugging halter neck dress – as did 14-year-old Millie, who wore a Calvin Klein ball gown. The teenager, who often teams glamorous dresses with trainers at awards ceremonies, opted this time for a pair of nude kitten heels

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery, who wore a floor-length strapless blue tulle gown by Carolina Herrera costing more than £6,000, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role in Netflix series Godless.

But the 36-year- old lost out to US actress Regina King for another Netflix drama, Seven Seconds.

Three men completed the British night of triumph at the Emmys.

Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, 43, won Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series for his role as a KGB spy in The Americans.

Comedian John Oliver took the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series for his late-night US show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver. And Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker won Best Writing for a Limited Series

Best Drama Series went to Game Of Thrones.
