Cold-hearted calling

-

I AGREE it’s unkind to think you’re being clever by keeping a sales person on the phone for fun (Letters).

Many people in call centres don’t like their job and don’t deserve to be humiliated. I’m polite and tell them: ‘I’m sorry, I wouldn’t want to do your job, which must be stressful, but I’m not interested in what you are selling me.’

I have been thanked and told they’d had nothing but insults all day. It’s not clever to humiliate someone. Wasting their time is stopping them from earning money because they are paid on commission.

B. DAVIS, address supplied. I DECIDED to take my revenge on the next fake Microsoft caller. After the usual scripted nonsense, I told him: ‘ This is going nowhere. Put Bill Gates on.’

There was a brief pause and then to my astonishment I heard the same caller say: ‘Hello, this is Bill Gates. How can I help you?’
