THE SUMMER OF LOVE

- Mrs A. Bass, Theydon Bois, Essex.

Oh, what a magnificent summer! Downing ice-cold drinks late into the night. Hot, panting dogs in sunglasses, Their owners in shorts — what a sight! Winter, a discontented memory, All forgotten as the temperatures rose. The pervading smell of sun cream, Paddling pool weather complete with a hose. In the city the working folk sweltered, While at the beach it was crowded out, too. In woods, dappled sunlight filtered through the trees, Bring a picnic, the best thing to do. And although England didn’t win the World Cup, Gareth Southgate was a manager of dreams, Single-handed he brought back the waistcoat, And our pride in our great England team. The royal wedding of Harry and Meghan, The passion of Bishop Michael — what a guy! The bride was serene, Harry nervous, And that gospel choir made us all cry. At Wimbledon it was a bumper year for strawberries, And flying ants invaded the courts. Poor Andy was injured (come on, Tim!) The loudest cheer for new mum Serena — what sports! This summer was golden and, with hindsight, In the depths of January ashen with cold, We will grasp it, for this was the good life, A summer of love to be told.
