So what on earth happens now? Hurdles that the Prime Minister must overcome
THERESA May faces a potentially nightmarish end to 2018.
The Tory conference
THE first challenge is the Tory party conference which starts on September 30 in Birmingham. Boris Johnson is planning a pro- Brexit rally for hundreds of the party’s grassroots activists. The event will aim to put more pressure on her to ‘chuck Chequers’.
Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage is planning a nationwide tour of ‘Leave Means Leave’ rallies. It starts in Bolton this Sunday, with a Save Brexit rally on September 30 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Return of Parliament
THE return on October 9 will be the first time MPs outraged at Mrs May’s insistence on sticking with
her Chequers plan will have a chance to voice their opinions. It could also offer an opportunity for a leadership challenge. A handful of members of the pro-Brexit European Research Group of Tory MPs have been threatening to overthrow the PM for weeks.
More tough EU meetings
DONAlD Tusk has warned the next EU summit on October 18 is the moment Brexit talks could fail if Britain does not make more concessions. This would lead to him abandoning a further summit due to be held on November 15.
MPs’ backing?
MRs May’s biggest challenge could then be getting any Brexit ‘divorce’ deal past MPs, with both labour MPs and Brexiteers lining up against a potential deal.
