SEPTEMBER 21, 1955 THE first ITN newscast will be delivered by Chris Chataway, Oxford graduate and three-mile record-holding distance-runner. Chataway, who will appear every weekday at 10pm, said: ‘I deliver news items largely in my own words, and with my own opinions if I should feel strongly about anything.’ SEPTEMBER 21, 1957 THE Pope is said to be considering Church punishment for careless drivers. A Vatican source said: ‘Reckless driving falls under the sanction of the Fifth Commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.”’ The Pontiff has reminded Roman Catholics of this twice recently — in audiences to motor- scooter riders and Italian Automobile Club officials.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

LIAM GALLAGHER, 46. The Manchester- born rocker has a long-running feud with his brother Noel, with whom he formed Oasis, saying of him: ‘I’ve had more fun with a tin of sardines.’ Liam has two sons and two daughters with four women, including ex-wives actress Patsy Kensit and pop star Nicole Appleton (pictured). He met his 21-year-old daughter Molly, whose mum is singer Lisa Moorish, for the first time in May. He said: ‘The girl’s been looked after and clothed and fed and sent to lovely schools. I bought them a house and all that tack.’ He said of his other daughter: ‘I’ve not met the one in New York either.’ SIMON MAYO, 60. The DJ and novelist has spent 36 years at the BBC. Mayo, who is paid up to £350,000 a year by Auntie, said his most extravagant- ever purchase was two cashmere Gucci jumpers at £200 each. His most embarrassing moment was when model Naomi Campbell was persuaded to bring a cake to the studio on his birthday and he had no idea who she was.
