MAGICAL WORLD A Discovery Of Witches, 9pm, Sky One

THIS fantasy drama is taking its time, but it’s worth it for the tense moments when someone’s supernatur­al power suddenly explodes. There’s a moment like that for Diana tonight as the pressure on her to reveal the book escalates, and we also learn more about the fascinatin­g Matthew.

CHECK MATE Brooklyn Castle, 9pm, PBS America

IN NEW YORK, there’s an inner-city school that boasts the most successful junior high chess team in the whole of the U.S. The squad is the subject of an uplifting new film that sees the game as a great leveller, especially at a school with so many poor students.

DARK COMEDY DRAMA Maniac, Netflix

DIRECTED by Cary Fukunaga (who will helm the next Bond movie) and based on a Norwegian series, Netflix’s stylish, split-reality drama dives headlong into the deepest recesses of the human psyche. Jonah Hill and Emma Stone (pictured) play the wounded souls at its core, who begin their adventure at a strange drug trial.

ELECTRONIC BEATS Can You Feel It — How Dance Music Conquered The World, 10pm, BBC4

WELL-STRUCTURED history of dance music, from its early repetitive ‘four to the floor’ beat — which allowed seamless mixing between records in clubs — through the rise of remixes and beyond. There are some surprising side stories, as well as contributi­ons from the likes of disco legend Tom Moulton, house pioneer Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk and modern superstar DJs Pete Tong and David Guetta.
