There’s a buzz about the place! 60,000 bees nest in hospital roof
SPENDING time in hospital isn’t usually a sweet experience … until, that is, honey starts oozing from the roof.
More than 60,000 bees have been discovered living in a hospital building after staff at Fulbourn Hospital in Cambridge spotted swarms of insects and called in experts. When a panel was removed from the staff building, employees said ‘honey oozed’ from the bricks and plasterwork.
Garry Locke, from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, told Cambridgeshire Live: ‘We were amazed when we saw how many bees were in the loft space of the porch – to see the size of the colony was incredible.’
After consulting with Serco, which maintains the building, the hospital called the Tree Bee Society. It took 12 hours to remove the bees which are thought to have been there for years. Abigail Reade, a director at the society, said the bees would ‘live happily’ after being relocated.
