SAVED IN THE NICK OF TIME!

Pensioner pulled from car as storm lashes UK

- By Liz Hull

THIS is the dramatic moment an elderly woman was rescued from her car in rising floodwaters as Storm Bronagh brought havoc to Britain.

The woman was dragged to safety in Rotherham by Richard Hamshaw, 32, who smashed a back window before leading her through waist-deep water.

The tree surgeon described how the woman drove straight into the water ‘full pelt’.

‘As the car went in, a bow wave went over the car,’ he said. ‘The back end went up and it started floating off. Then we heard banging on the window so I grabbed my tow rope because it’s got a big shackle on the end. I told her to get back from the window and smashed it.’

Bronagh, which comes after Storm Ali tore across the country earlier this week, has seen gale force winds bring down trees and powerlines.

Meanwhile, half a month’s worth of rain was dumped on parts of Wales and eastern England in 24 hours, causing serious flooding.

The stormy weather is set to continue this weekend.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for southern and central parts of England and Wales, with up to 2in of rain and more strong winds expected tomorrow.
