WE mET via a dating website, and even though we had just four years, one month and 26 days together, it was the happiest time of my life.

Gwen was 72 and I was 68, and I was instantly smitten when I saw her at a disco organised by the website Plenty of Fish on July 4, 2014.

She recognised me from my online profile and the first thing she asked was: ‘ Did you used to be a policeman?’

I spluttered ‘Yes’ — and that was it. From that moment, it seemed there was no one else present, just the two of us.
