Super Sam keeps Chiefs flying high

-

SAM SIMMONDS scored two tries to maintain Exeter’s 100 per cent record in the Premiership but they were made to struggle for a fourth successive win. Newcastle wing Zach Kibirige scythed through for the opening try after two minutes, with Toby Flood converting. This stung Exeter in life and after one of their trademark ‘keep ball’ attacks it was No 8 Simmonds who had enough power to get to the line, with brother Joe adding the conversion. What followed was 20 minutes of relentless Chiefs attack but Newcastle’s commitment in defence was outstanding and even when lock Ollie Atkins did get over, the TV official ruled that he had not grounded the ball. Newcastle lifted the siege through a mazy run from full back Simon Hammersley which took him clear only for opposite number Phil Dollman to cut him down with a brilliant last-ditch tackle. Another rolling maul by Exeter ended with Simmonds’ second try and another conversion from his brother. Flood cut the lead at half-time to 14-10 with a penalty. A Joe Simmonds penalty was cancelled out after the break by a Johnny Williams try which Flood converted. Matt Kvesic scored the Chiefs’ third try but Newcastle held out for a losing bonus point.
