Jose’s United are just like Wimbledon from the 80s

It was like watching 1980s Wimbledon THE fact that a player called Fred scored their goal was not the only thing about Manchester United’s performance against Wolves that was a throwback. As they toiled for a winner, they kept hitting long balls up to Romelu Lukaku and diagonal balls to Marouane Fellaini. It was just like watching Wimbledon in the Eighties. I don’t have a problem with teams playing this way but it is not what we expect from Manchester United, especially at home against a newly promoted side. What will concern their supporters is that this was not a one-off. You would normally expect these tactics from a promoted team visiting Old Trafford but Wolves were the complete opposite. For three-quarters of the game they were slick, easy on the eye and far more threatening than United. They were the better footballing side, playing with a tempo and rhythm that Jose Mourinho’s team lacked. To simply argue that Wolves are one of the best-ever sides to come up from the Championship is letting United off the hook. Do not forget that this team finished second last season. We should be seeing improvement but this was further evidence that United do not look capable of touching Manchester City or Liverpool.
