HOW DID THEY MISS THIS OFFSIDE?

- MARK CLATTENBURG

ARSENAL’S second goal, scored by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, should have been ruled out for offside. You cannot argue otherwise. The Arsenal striker was well offside when the ball was flicked to him by team-mate Aaron Ramsey and assistant referee Harry Lennard had a good view. Moments earlier, Lennard had got a tight call spot on as the move developed in the Everton half. But this mistake was clearly down to a split-second loss of concentration, just at the critical point Ramsey touches the ball. I understand why this type of error occurs, though in this instance I feel it should have been spotted. It’s the referee who is remembered for the award of these goals, not the assistants. There is one which still haunts me. That was Javier Hernandez’s goal for Manchester United in their 3-2 victory at Chelsea in 2012. Hernandez was coming back from an offside position in the goalmouth when he turned the ball in. It happened so fast and he looked onside when he scored, but it should have been ruled out — and I still get blamed for that six years later!
